Discover Emerald
Must-See Attractions in the Heart of Queensland
Emerald is a large, modern country town that was originally established in 1879 as a base for the building of the western railway. The township itself is not actually named after a gemstone but after ‘Emerald Downs’ Hill, a lush emerald green hill located on Emerald Downs, a property just north of town.
Initially a small service town supporting the local agricultural industry, Emerald is now considered the ‘hub’ of the Central Highlands. In 1972, the Emerald community welcomed the construction of Fairbairn Dam and the Emerald Irrigation Scheme which allowed for the significant development and expansion of agricultural practices within the region.
Emerald is very well known for its diverse industries; mining, fishing and agriculture. Farmers grow a variety of fruit and vegetables, cotton & grains throughout the year.
Blackdown Tableland National Park, situated in Central Queensland, is a standout destination in the Central Highlands region, located 576 km northwest of Brisbane. The park’s mountainous terrain creates a dramatic landscape filled with deep gorges, stunning waterfalls, and a rich diversity of vegetation. This unique environment provides visitors with a breathtaking experience, showcasing the natural beauty of Queensland.
The park is also the traditional home of the Ghungalu people, and their cultural heritage is evident in the ancient rock art found throughout the area. These artworks offer a rare glimpse into the lives and traditions of the land’s original custodians, adding a profound cultural dimension to the natural wonders of Blackdown Tableland. For those looking to explore both the natural and cultural treasures of Central Queensland, this national park is an essential destination.
Discover the largest painting in the Southern Hemisphere, a tribute to the Central Highlands’ role as a major Australian sunflower producer. Located in Emerald’s Morton Park, at the corner of the Capricorn Highway and Dundas Street, this colossal artwork was unveiled in October 1999. The painting, crafted from 24 sheets of plywood laminated into 7×10 meter panels, is coated with fibreglass and sealed with a gel coat. It took 50 liters of high-performance paint to complete this 4.5-tonne masterpiece.
In addition to this impressive giant sunflower painting, Morton Park is home to the Emerald Centenary of Federation Mosaic Pathway. Funded by the Centenary of Federation, this pathway offers a step-by-step snapshot of Emerald’s history through 21 intricately tiled mosaics, designed by 10 local artists. Stroll along this vibrant pathway to explore 100 years of Emerald’s rich heritage.
